The California 1400 Touring epitomizes a modern-looking bagger: long, sweeping lines and curvaceous accents but nothing too loud or obnoxious in the styling department. From a performance and function perspective, the 1400 Touring features all the attributes a tech junkie craves: ride-by-wire throttle control (first time ever on a Guzzi), electronic cruise control, dual-channel ABS, and MGCT traction control (the only cruiser in the world with all four of these technologies), which is pretty impressive based on its competition.

Not for the faint of heart, either, the California 1400 Touring’s 90-degree V-twin engine features four valves per cylinder and a very peppy 78.86 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheel. The get-up-and-go factor is ultimately what sets this bike apart from the rest of the baggers we currently have in our testbike stable. We were a little standoffish when familiarizing ourselves with the three different engine mapping systems: Turismo (touring), Veloce (fast), and Pioggia (rain). We found that the modes could only be navigated while the bike was in neutral, which if you encountered inclement weather, you’d have to pull over and toggle to the Pioggia mode. Or if you came into to some hilly, twisty terrain, again, you’d pull over, adjust the map, and off you go. Not a deal breaker but something to note. The traction control was also an impressive function, which also backed up our claim of this bike being more based on ride performance and ride quality, without skimping on creature comforts.

Guzzi’s Touring bike is equipped with a steel tube frame and rubber isolators that cradle the engine in place to minimize vibration, though the Guzzi’s engine design vibrates more at idle than any other bike we’ve tested. So much so, it vibrated down the driveway and onto its side when quickly jumping off to close the backyard gate, according to one of our test riders. The beefy 46mm telescopic front fork with 4.7 inches of travel soaks up the bumps aggressively without too much squish. As for the rear chassis components, the swingarm features dual preload-adjustable shock absorbers with 4.3 inches of rear-wheel travel that provide an aggressive yet comfortable feel when hitting it hard solo but won’t bottom out with a passenger and loads of cargo. Halting the 743-pound sport-bagger are dual Brembo grabbers and 320mm floating rotors attached to the 18-inch aluminum wheel and 130-7018 tire up front, accompanied by a single 282mm stainless-steel fixed disc and a two-piston Brembo floating caliper on a 16-inch wheel and beefy 200mm rear tire combo. Did I mention the bike comes with standard ABS? And it works extremely well. A few times we had to grab hard on the front lever while jamming on the foot pedal due to some inconsiderate texting cagers on the road (a pretty common occurrence in SoCal). Let’s just say our confidence level went up a notch after putting the brakes through their paces.

The bike’s ergonomics are pretty comfortable. The rider positioning provides more of an on-top-of-the-bike feel and not necessarily that in-the-bike feel, which bagger riders have become accustomed to. But the large seat’s shape is still cushy and positions you at barely an arm’s reach to the handlebar. The windshield also serves its purpose well in that wind buffeting is very minimal if at all. As for the foot positioning, the floorboards are adequate—large enough for stretching out a bit while not being too cumbersome. To sum up, the California 1400 Touring model is a great long-distance bike, especially if you want to get there going like a bat outta hell!

RIDING IMPRESSION:

Wes Drelleshak Editor, Baggers

When I first tossed a leg over the bike it felt very different. The seat height was taller as if the bike was a tad too small for me, but I quickly got over that after a few miles. I started the bike and felt the engine rotate the bike to the right, so naturally I continued to blip the throttle several more times just to feel the left-to-right twist over and over. My first day of riding I noticed the windshield did its job of reducing wind turbulence, especially on the freeway. Splitting lanes was no problem except getting used to the initial thrust right off the engine, but once off idle the engine was smooth and plentiful. The handling of this bike is really good mainly due to the geometric, sports car-like suspension, and adjustable traction control. If I were to pick a favorite thing about the bike it would be the ABS brakes. They’re fantastic! In fact, I would hardly use the rear brakes because the front brakes were simply nothing short of magnificent. I could come in hot into a corner and tap the front brakes to slow down and feel completely in control. The more I rode the bike the more I fell in love with it. If I could say anything negative about the California 1400 Touring bike it would be that the large center gauge glares annoyingly and is somewhat hard to see at various times of day, and I’m also not a huge fan of the white seat.
